The Princess is Here: MaryLiz Interview

Dictionary.com states a princess as a noblewoman of varying status or rank. We found a better definition that describes the characteristics of a princess: a strong, brave, intelligent, committed, loyal, sensitive, beautiful, adventurous, and curious young female. While a majority of females may carry only half of those characteristics, MaryLiz proves that she can carry all of these characteristics and more. After a very successful fair concert performance opening for Eric Benet, this R&B singer, songwriter, producer, pianist, and violist has proved that she is ready to take over as “The Princess of R&B.”

MaryLiz started out as a 6-year-old child singer with her local church choir. Being picked to sing during the Thanksgiving & Christmas programs, MaryLiz has never been too afraid of the spotlight. “Looking back now, it was obvious that I was kind of different,” MaryLiz stated. Coming from a Christian family household, she wasn’t aware of the various styles of R&B, soul, and pop commercial music on the market at that time. Still, MaryLiz had a natural niche for singing this type of music which in return made the characteristics of her singing style unique.

She has been recording since the age of 14 and has been featured on many artists’ singles and CDs. In October 2009, MaryLiz finally sat down and focused on releasing her first mixtape titled “The Princess Is Here.” When asked about her anticipation for the release, she expressed excitement. “ I didn’t like the idea of remaking somebody else’s song [for a mixtape], but it came out well,” MaryLiz explains. “It’s a lot of work! It was a lot more work than I thought, but it is worth it.” With the mixtape, she begins her aim to create a new genre of music. With 6 original tracks ready to be placed on her upcoming debut album, MaryLiz is striving to shape a new attitude to the music industry.

MaryLiz received the name “The Princess” after being introduced as “The Princess of R&B” in her first big concert in November 2008. “After that, it kind of stuck,” she mentions. Although she is a princess in some eyes, she has made plenty of sacrifices for her love of music. “Music comes first right now and some people can’t handle it. I had to sacrifice those friends that didn’t think my goals fit me. There are also those friends that don’t understand my sacrifice for music and got offended.” Even with the sacrifices, she is displaying that she can handle it well.

MaryLiz proves that she is more than just a noblewoman with status. With her able to have multi-talented characteristics and professionalism in the studio and on the stage, she has nothing but royalty to look forward to in the future. As she continues to aim for the industry crown, she will continue to sit on a throne only fit for a “Princess of R&B.”
